Since PCR became the method of choice for microbiology testing, one of its biggest challenges has been the potential detection of dead cells given the presence of their free DNA in the sample. This kit removes free DNA in food and environmental samples before PCR analysis and can be easily integrated into the workflow of kits for the detection of different pathogens. The DNA of dead cells is enzymatically degraded while the DNA of live cells, protected by cell membranes, remains intact and available for subsequent amplification via PCR. The kit is as effective as treatment with ethidium monoazide (EMA) or propidium monoazide (PMA), previously suggested as methods to avoid the detection of free DNA but is much easier to use.
