mTSB is a selective enrichment broth for pathogenic Escherichia coli (STEC) in products intended for human and animal consumption as indicated in ISO16654 and ISO13136. The standard Tryptone Soya Broth (TSB or CASO) has been modified by increasing the buffer properties for a good recovering and growth of Escherichia coli O157, while addition of bile salts inhibits the growth of Gram positive bacteria. Novobiocin is used for the inhibition of Proteus spp and some others Gram egative bacteria. Tryptone, soy peptone and dextrose are respectively nitrogen and carbon energy sources that facilitates bacterial growth. Sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance, while dipotassium phosphate acts as buffering agent. The product is available in powdered format to be supplemented with novobiocin. After enrichment in mTSB the STECs can be detected via Real-Time PCR using Generon PATHfinder kits
