CASE is a selective chromogenic agar for the detection of Salmonella. It uses a dual chromogenic system to differentiate between Salmonella and non-target organisms growing on the agar. The first chromogen is a target for the esterase activity present in Salmonella species. The use of this chromogen produces blue / green colonies. The second chromogen is a target for ß-glucosidase present in non-target organisms which can grow on the agar and possess esterase activity. The use of the second chromogen masks the use of the first resulting in black colonies in non-Salmonella. All other organisms are inhibited or grow colorless on the agar. The medium can detect non-motile Salmonella (S. Pullorum and S. Gallinarum) and monophasic variants (1, 4, [5], 12: i :-). The medium is also capable of detecting serotypes with weak esterase activity (S. Dublin) and lactose positive strains (S. Arizonae). CASE Chromogenic Agar forms with supplemented BPW-HQ Enrichment Broth, Neogen's innovative One-Broth-One-Plate Salmonella (OBOP-S) workflow which has been validated and certified to ISO 16140-2 to enable the detection of Salmonella using a single enrichment broth and an agar plate in 48 hours. CASE can also be used as a second agar alongside XLD as part of ISO 6579-1: 2017 and is available as 90mm ready-to-use plates or as a powder medium.
