Slanetz and Bartley Agar is used as a presumptive medium in the detection and enumeration of intestinal enterococci (Lancefield Group D) in waters (membrane filtration method) according to ISO7899-2. Many Enterococcus can be detected and enumerated with this medium: E. faecalis, E. faecium, E. durans and E. hirae, as well as other species. Also some species of the Streptococcus, S. bovis and S. equinus are detected. The principle of the medium relies on the ability of Enterococci to reduce TTC to formazan, resulting in the production of red colonies. Due to the presence of sodium azide, the medium inhibits other micro-organisms. The medium is available as ready-to-use plates and as bottles or dehydrated powder to be supplemented with TTC.
