XLD is a medium used for the detection and enumeration of Enterobacteria, and especially Salmonella, for testing contamination of non-sterile pharmaceutical products according to Harmonized Pharmacopeia. Several differentiation reactions are revealed in this medium: the fermentation of lactose, xylose and/or saccharose increase acidity and turns phenol red to yellow; production of sulfidric acid induce formation of iron sulfide, which blackens the colonies; decarboxylation of the lysine in cadaverin induces an alkalinization of the area around LDC-positive colonies. Salmonella typically forms well-developed, red colonies, with or without a black center. SIFIN XLD is available as dehydrated powder.
